Who We Are

The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul are a community of Apostolic Life in the Catholic Church. Founded by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac in 1633 in Paris, France, we strive to serve those most in need.

Today, there are around 13,000 Daughters of Charity living and working in more than 96 countries throughout the world.

History of Daughters at the UN

The Daughters of Charity are at the UN to engage in advocacy to improve the quality of life for those living in poverty and enhance the stewardship of the environment. We join our voice with the voices of other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to influence critical global policy issues.

We believe that every person is created in the image of God. We recognize that every life is sacred and that every person has inherent dignity and worth. Our human rights and responsibilities are founded in our shared human dignity.

As stated in our Inter Assemblies Document, “The Company wants to play a part in the fight against destitution and injustices and pass on its passion for universal fraternity. Collaboration with others and actions across Provinces contribute to this impetus and become signs of God’s presence.”
