The year 2025 stands out as a pivotal moment in our shared global journey- a time when the international community gathers in key summits to confront urgent challenges and discern paths toward a just, inclusive, and sustainable future. From the Ocean Conference in Nice to the World Social Summit in Qatar, this year calls us not only to witness but to engage deeply as people of faith and action.
These gatherings are not isolated events; they are interconnected steps on a path that invites each of us to walk in solidarity with people and planet.
The Ocean Conference – Nice, France (June 2025)
The ocean sustains all life. It regulates our climate, provides food and livelihoods to billions, and embodies the mystery and majesty of God’s creation. Yet today, our oceans face devastating threats: plastic pollution, acidification, overfishing, and deep-sea mining.
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice brings the world together to restore and protect marine ecosystems. The voices of small island states, Indigenous communities, and youth leaders rise with urgency. As people grounded in the Gospel and committed to care for our common home, we are called to advocate for policies that honor the dignity of creation and preserve it for future generations.
The Conference on Financing for Development – Spain (July 2025)
Development without justice is an empty promise. Financing for development is about more than numbers—it’s about the moral choices that determine who bears burdens and who reaps benefits. The conference in Spain will revisit the global architecture of aid, debt, tax, and trade.
For countries burdened by debt or robbed through illicit financial flows, real development remains out of reach. As Vincentians, our preferential option for the poor compels us to call for ethical economic systems that serve people, not profit. We must demand transparency, global tax justice, and a financial system rooted in human dignity.
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) – New York, USA (July 2025)
The HLPF is the UN’s central platform for reviewing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At this halfway point between 2015 and 2030, the world remains far from meeting its promises. Inequality, climate disruption, and conflict continue to undermine human rights and peace.
Faith-based and civil society organizations bring powerful witness to the HLPF: the lived realities of those left behind. We bring stories, expertise, and hope. Our presence reminds policymakers that behind every statistic is a life—sacred, precious, and deserving of care.
The World Social Summit – Doha, Qatar (November 2025)
Thirty years after the landmark 1995 Copenhagen Summit, the world gathers again to redefine the global social contract. The World Social Summit in Qatar will address deep structural inequalities, the need for universal social protection, decent work, access to education, and systems that promote equity and peace.
This is a historic opportunity. Our call is clear: to walk with the excluded, advocate for policies that put people at the center, and speak for those whose voices go unheard. The Summit reminds us that social justice is not charity—it is a requirement of faith.
A Faith That Engages
These events are not just about politics and policy. They are about people. They are about the future we are shaping with every choice we make. As followers of Christ and part of the Vincentian family, we are called to walk with God’s people—especially the poor, the displaced, and the forgotten.
Through advocacy, prayer, education, and participation, we make our presence felt. We become agents of transformation. Let 2025 be a year where we deepen our commitment to the common good, to listening, and to building a world where dignity and justice flourish. Let us walk humbly. Let us walk boldly.
