Every year on June 20, the world observes World Refugee Day, a day dedicated to honoring the courage, resilience, and dignity of millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes. Behind every statistic is a human story—a mother protecting her children, a young person searching for a future, an elderly person longing for peace, and families carrying memories of a homeland they may never see again.
Today, more than ever, refugees remind us of both the fragility and the strength of the human spirit. They have lost homes, livelihoods, and often loved ones, yet they continue to hope. Their journeys are marked by uncertainty, but also by extraordinary courage.
World Refugee Day invites us to move beyond sympathy toward solidarity. We are called to listen to refugee voices, advocate for policies that uphold human dignity, support organizations serving displaced persons, and work for a world where no one is forced to flee their home.
May this day renew our commitment to walking alongside refugees, migrants, and all displaced persons. In a world often marked by division and fear, their resilience inspires us to become artisans of peace and hope.
In its ‘Global Community Hour’ this month, JCoR reminded us of the essence of what this day means for all of us: On the 20th of June, we will be observing World Refugee Day, and the theme of World Refugee Day this year is “Until everyone is safe.” I would like to share an excerpt with you, highlighting the reasoning behind this chosen theme:
The promise of safety is being tested in every region of the world. Seventy-five years after the adoption of the [United Nations] 1951 [Refugee] Convention… that promise remains one of the clearest undertakings of the international community: that people forced to flee should not be returned to danger, and should be able to live in dignity while displaced…
When people fleeing danger are denied protection, insecurity deepens families are driven on to perilous routes, children lose years of learning, women and girls face greater risks, and host communities are left without the support they need. Protecting refugees is therefore not only an act of compassion; it is a condition of stability and peace.
The theme “Until Everyone Is Safe” calls on Governments to uphold fair and accessible asylum systems, …communities to welcome those forced to flee, and each of us to defend the principle that safety must never depend on nationality, wealth, race, religion, gender, political opinion or migration status. Protection is fulfilled only when people forced to flee can live without fear, rebuild their lives, contribute to their communities and, when conditions allow, return home voluntarily, safely and with dignity.
JCoR acknowledges that we are gathering at a moment when the dignity, safety, and rights of refugees are being challenged around the world – and this challenge is confronting not only refugees, but also a multiplicity of migrants and people on the move. The past year and a half has been characterized by a dangerous rollback of migrant rights, the criminalization of migration itself, and escalating attacks on the organizations and individuals who stand in solidarity with people on the move. Therefore, we decided to expand our focus this month to include refugees AND migrants.
People migrate for a diversity of reasons: fleeing war, persecution, and violence; uprooted by climate disasters and environmental degradation; escaping economic instability or poverty; and forcibly displaced by conditions that threaten their ability to live with dignity. Whether we are talking about refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, those who have been trafficked, economic migrants, or people on the move, all are equally deserving of rights, dignity, and safety.
As people of faith, we recognize in refugees the face of Christ, who Himself experienced displacement when His family fled into Egypt. Scripture repeatedly calls us to welcome the stranger, protect the vulnerable, and act with justice and compassion. Refugees are not merely recipients of assistance; they are bearers of gifts, talents, cultures, and dreams that enrich our communities.
Prayer for Refugees
God of mercy and compassion,
You walk with Your people through deserts, across seas, and through every uncertainty of life. Today we remember all refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced persons throughout the world.
Comfort those who have lost their homes, families, and communities. Protect those who journey in search of safety and dignity. Strengthen those who work to welcome, accompany, and serve them.
Open our hearts to recognize every refugee as our sister and brother. Remove fear and indifference from our communities, and inspire us to act with justice, compassion, and solidarity.
May leaders of nations seek peaceful solutions to conflicts and create pathways of protection and hope for those who are displaced.
We entrust all refugees to Your loving care, confident that You walk with them and that Your promise of hope never fails.
